Newport Neptune Gloucester 16 Sailboats
Hi Shorty,
There are some minor differences in th Newport 16 and Lockley Newport 16. The Newport weighs 750 lbs vs the 900 on the Lockley Newport thus a 103.5 dPn vs 106. Also the Lockley Newport(Gloucester 16) in that 900 lbs has a 200 lb keel plus 150 lbs of internal ballast for a total of 350 lbs. The Newport 16 has 250 lbs ballast (don't know if that is all in a keel). The Neptune 16 has an aluminum and lead eclased in glass keel with most of the weight in the lead at the bottom. I think the Gloucester has a cast iron keel. While all that weight makes the boats stable the shape of the keel is not efficient and without a big genoa or drifter the keel causes the boats to stall in light air.
I'm thinking once again about buying one of the three (or four if you count the Neptune 16, Lockley Newport 16, Newport 16 and Gloucester 16. Advantage to Gloucester in the cabin with a cutout for a portapottie vs. a hole in the V-berth on the Newport , Neptune and Lockley Newport that could hold a bucket. Advantage Newport for speed. Advantage post 1987 Gloucester for opening ports and glass covered keel winch vs wood thwart with winch hanging under it. Advantage Neptune for a sliding hatch (slides back into the cockpit area) vs the other boats with hinges on forward end of hatch. Advantage Neptune for a little more headroom in cabin with doghouse configuration.
Of course I have eleven boats I have to part with before (or maybe during) my acquisiton of one of these.
I just started a new Yahoo group for these boats to hopefully meet others that are also interested in these little beauties.
